ChatGPT is after recruiter’s jobs, but it won’t get it - because modern recruiters will become robot-proof! But How?

Katrina Collier wrote the book The Robot-Proof Recruiter in 2019, way before the ChatGPT hype, and she was my guest of choice to answer that question.

In her timeless book, she explains her deep conviction that the most curious and adaptive recruiters aren't at risk of being replaced by whatever new technology. So how do you robot-proof yourself as a recruiter?

Two main pillars:

1/ Get your intake meetings right.

Unfortunately, on both sides, whether they're working in an agency or working in the company, recruiters often don’t ask for enough information from hiring managers. The problem is that it’s impossible to conduct a high-performing recruiting process if you don’t know what the hiring manager is looking for. For instance, your job descriptions will be super generic, and your outreach messages unappealing. The type of text ChatGPT could write (so you’re not robot-proofed).

The first key to robot proofed yourself is learning to do proper intake meetings, as it’s the foundation of any good recruiter’s work. If you want to learn how to do razor-sharp intake meetings, James Donovan reveals his whole process in episode #33 of this podcast (taking 30min to listen to this episode is a no-brainer).

But maybe some of you will reply to me: ”I know how to do intake meetings, but my hiring manager doesn’t want to spend too much time with me, I’m stuck.” In his book Evidence-Based Hiring, Atta Tarki revealed that Netflix's former Head of Talent Acquisition Patty McCord could reassign her recruiters to other parts of the business if they were not getting the partnership needed from hiring managers. Patty McCord: "Many hiring managers would get upset at me, but I would tell them that I had many other hiring managers that would be delighted to provide the partnership we needed to help them be successful. I made it clear to hands-off or disengaged hiring managers that I couldn't afford to spend twice as much of my recruiters' time to achieve half the results for them as for their peers who were engaged in their own searches.".

And if no hiring managers give you the time of day because your company's culture doesn't value recruiting and recruiters, you’ll have a hard time in the company. I'd advise you to seek new professional opportunities elsewhere.

2/ Become a good closer

Closing candidates requires the same deep empathy skills as intake meetings to understand candidates’ (not hiring managers’) motives and make them the proper offer. This is something that AI will have a hard time automating. As Katrina mentioned during the episode, people aren't going to make a decision as important as changing jobs by talking to a Chatbot or some other AI. So being better at closing candidates is one of the best ways to robot-proof yourself.

If you want to level up your closing game, listen to episode #25 of this podcast with Jose Guardado to learn how to reach a 92% closing rate. Jose has been recruiting for 15 years, working for startups like Nebula or large companies like Google. He has also worked at Andreessen Horowitz (one of the most prestigious VC firms) and coached Y Combinator founders.
